Bloodless Approaches To Doorknob Replacement
Perhaps you are familiar with this. It is in the early morning hours. Maybe it is late at night. You are in your loft bed, asleep. Maybe you are in your queen size bed. Any way, you awake to nature’s calling. You approach the bathroom door. The knob does not function. Maybe it should have been fixed.
There is another possible scenario. Your old doorknob will not stay latched. It is impossible to lock the bathroom or bedroom door. Someone accidentally opens it at the most inopportune of times. That doorknob needs to be replaced. Here are some steps to take, that should be painless.
Your old doorknob
Examine your old doorknob. Notice what type it is. Does it have a round or rectangular latch hole, on the edge of the door? Remove the old doorknob. Measure the thickness of the door. Measure the inside diameter of the hole on the front or back of the door. Write these measurements down. Take the measurements and the old door knob with you to the hardware store.
Doorknob shopping
There may be many different doorknobs in which to choose. Look at your old unit. Try to get a similar replacement. It will be simpler and easier to install. Buy the best one that you can afford. Cheap doorknobs may not last long. They may not work well either. If you get a good one, you might never have to concern yourself with it again.
Preparations
There is little preparation required. You may have to make a few modifications. This will be covered in the installation.
Tools needed
Simple tools are all that is required. You may be itching to use that new Echo chainsaw. It will have to wait, today. Get a screwdriver, hammer, and wood chisel. Hopefully, you will only need the screwdriver.
The new unit
Installation should be simple. It is often the reversal of removal. However, it can get tricky. The strike plate on the new unit may be slightly different. The new strike plate may have to be moved, in order to work. You can do this with the hammer and wood chisel. You may need a drill to make new pilot holes for the screws. In some cases, you can reuse the old strike plate. If it is not worn or damaged, it will be less work.
There should be little more to do besides cleanup. You may have wood debris all over your floor. Your Dyson upright vacuum cleaner should easily take care of that matter.
In closing
You may receive a warm feeling of achievement with your new doorknob. You may also have a renewed sense of privacy. You should have few problems in your venture.
